Lightrock welcomes latest round of senior appointments

London, 31 March 2022. Lightrock, the global growth impact investor, is strengthening its platform with recent firm-wide promotions and appointments to the board, adding to its exceptional team of diverse talent.

Lightrock welcomes Vivian Riefberg, Ann Cairns and Dr. Peter Nussbaum to the board. Vivian brings with her a wealth of expertise in healthcare from McKinsey, several board positions and the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. Ann is Executive Vice Chair at Mastercard, and held many senior leadership positions in Financial Services. She is also a leading diversity figure and Global Chair of the 30% Group, as well as lead non-executive board member of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Peter brings with him extensive experience from Millbank LLP, where he co-founded the German office and was a senior partner at the firm’s corporate, M&A and private equity activities, and in that capacity also advised on several of Lightrock’s investments, including Wefox and Lilium.

In addition, Lightrock is delighted to announce the promotions of Ashish Puri and Christopher Steinau to the role of Partner. A Growth Investor at Lightrock since May 2020, Ashish has made an outstanding contribution in that time, leading recent deals such as Selina, Liqid, Dataiku and more. Christopher just recently joined from Northzone in 2021, where he was involved in investments in several successful scale-ups like Personio, Tier Mobility, Infogrid, Forto and Flink. He is bringing with him a wealth of investment and operational experience as well as building a promising pipeline of activity. At Lightrock he has so far led the investment in Alasco, a cloud-based financial management platform for the real estate industry.

About the new Board members and Partners

Vivian Riefberg - Non-Executive Board member

Vivian holds over three decades of experience in healthcare and public sector consultancy. Vivian is a former member of McKinsey & Company’s global Board of Directors and held various senior leadership positions at the consulting firm, including leader of the Public Sector Practice for the Americas, and co-leader of the US Health Care practice.

Vivian holds several board positions, including Signify Health (SGFY-NYSE), K Health and John Hopkins Medicine, as well as advisory board roles including the Smithsonian's American Women's History Museum, the National Education Equity Lab and the Lorna Breen Heroes Foundation. In 2020, she joined the faculty at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, as the David C. Walentas Jefferson Scholars Foundation Professorship Chair. At Darden, she focuses on healthcare, strategy and entrepreneurship across private, public and non-profit sectors.

Ann Cairns - Non-executive Board member

Ann is the Executive Vice Chair of Mastercard, with extensive history driving inclusion, diversity and innovation globally through partnerships with governments, businesses and NGOs. Prior to Mastercard, Ann held many senior leadership positions including heading the Financial Services Group with Alvarez & Marsal in London, a tenure as CEO of Transaction Banking at ABN-AMRO and 15 years in senior operational positions at Citigroup.

Ann is the global chair of the 30% Club and the chair of the Financial Alliance for Women. Ann is also the lead non-executive board member for the UK government’s department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), as well as a member of the UK Government’s AI Council.

Dr Peter Nussbaum - Non-executive Board member

Peter specialises in M&A and capital markets law, having been involved in numerous IPOs in Germany and the USA, such as United Internet and Sauer, amongst others. A former co-head of Freshfields’ global Private Equity Group and one of the founding partners of the Munich office of Milbank LLP, he was one of the first lawyers in the German market to place a special focus on the private equity industry. Peter has been recognized by JUVE, Legal 500, IFLR1000, Chambers Global and Chambers Europe for his work within corporate law, corporate litigation, private equity and large M&A transactions.

Peter has also advised LGT Group and Lightrock on multiple transactions. After a long-standing collaboration with the Prince of Liechtenstein Foundation, he currently heads the Administration of the Princely Assets. In addition to board seats at entities of the Princely Assets, he serves on the supervisory board of FOCAM, Frankfurt, a multi-family office which he co-founded.

Ashish Puri – Investment Team, Partner

Ashish (Ash)'s experiences in founding and building businesses inspire him to work side-by-side with mission-driven entrepreneurs. He joined Lightrock after founding and scaling an ecommerce business and investing in primary and secondary opportunities across Venture and Growth funds at Partech Ventures, TempoCap and Episode1. Some of Ashish’s previous investments include Depop (acquired by Etsy), Onfido, Talentsoft (acquired by Cegid), Attest, Digital Surgery (acquired by Medtronic). Ashish started his career as a consultant. He holds a double Masters in Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA and a Diplôme d'Ingénieur from CentraleSupélec, France. In his free time, Ash can be found exploring new cultures through his travels, tending to his bonsai collection, and spending time with family.

Christopher Steinau – Investment Team, Partner

Christopher Steinau is a former entrepreneur turned investor having founded, scaled, and exited Uncover, the app to discover and book London's most desirable restaurants. Prior to joining Lightrock, he served as a Principal at Northzone, where he invested in several successful scale-ups like Personio, Forto, Tier Mobility, Infogrid and Flink. Through his work with such businesses, he witnessed first-hand the power of founding teams with a strong sustainability mission, which he is now backing at Lightrock, where he led the investment in Alasco, a cloud-based financial management platform for the real estate industry. His focus areas are future of work, property tech, mobility/logistics as well as food tech. He holds an MBA from London Business School and Diplom-Kaufmann from the EBS, Wiesbaden, Germany.
